Preschool children who are 4.5 - 5 years old are welcomed
into this beautiful, full-day
classroom overlooking the nature center and playground
areas. Young children
are ''learning to learn'', so each
day teachers plan
activities designed to broaden the
base for learning and build strong character traits in the
children. During planning meetings, teachers design lessons
around themes in order for children to learn the early
literacy, math, science, social and emotional skills
necessary for success in kindergarten and elementary school.
Children are guided to develop
confidence,
independence, curiosity,
motivation and the ability to
communicate. Cooperation,
empathy and self-control,
so important to success in the
early years of school,
are modeled and practiced.
Pre-kindergarden activities in
nature
study, gardening, art, music and movement are
woven into weekly lesson plans. Musik Garten, an
environmentally based music program, is taught by KELC's
music educator.
Individual, small and large group
activities are designed to encourage
school readiness. Assessment Portfolios, designed to record
children's progress in all areas of development, are a key
feature in this classroom. Teachers gather anecdotal
records, informal inventories, digital photos and checklists
to keep track of children's progress. The portfolios play a
key role in the informative parent/teacher conferences held
during October and March.
