Children who turn five during the early fall months are
welcomed into this
large, lovely, full-day classroom lined with windows.
Developmentally appropriate
lesson plans reflect the children’s
interests and challenge
them to explore all areas of the
curriculum: reading, math,
language arts, science, social studies, music,
art, and physical education. Individual,
small and large group
activities are designed to ensure
that children succeed in all
curricular areas. Because
success in school depends on
social and emotional
competence, teachers carefully plan
activities designed to foster
children’s curiosity, motivation,
persistence, cooperation,
self-control and ability to
communicate with others. Special classes are taught by
enrichment teachers who often take the advangtage of
teaching in outdoor classrooms.
During the academic year, teachers keep detailed records of
children's progress on eight nationally accepted learning
standards. Digital photos of children's activities,
anecdotal comments, checklists and work samples are filed in
Individual Assessment Portfolios. Information in the
portfolios guides teacher planning and serves as a guideline
when teachers meet with parents at conference time.
