Selecting Books for Winter Enjoyment
January and February bring the type of weather that begs us
to curl up on the sofa with an quilt and a good book. When
you choose books to entice your preschooler to join you
under the quilt, consider having these types of books in a
basket nearby:
- Books that have simple text that your child can memorize
and "pretend to read" alone.
- Books about common experiences: going to preschool,
going to the dentist, walking in the snow.
- Books about how things work: machines, how plants grow,
etc.
- Books about the "ABC's", numbers/counting, size/shape
and other concepts.
- Books that include children that look like your child
and children who are doing things familiar to your child.
- Books about feelings (sharing, sibling rivalry, etc.)
- Books related to special interests your child has
exhibited (dinosaurs, ballet, painting, science concepts).
- Books by your child's favorite author/illustrator.
Reading to your preschooler is the most important thing you
can do to ensure successful, independent reading ability in
later years. Talking about books, asking your child
questions about a story, and using the vocabulary an author
uses are a few ways to extend the experience of sharing a
good book.
A key to developing avid readers is to expose them to great
books. Ask any KELC teacher for suggestions of great books
for your child--or, next time you're in one of our buildings
just look around. Each classroom has an abundant supply of
rich literature displayed for children to enjoy.
