Fine Motor Skills At Home
It is possible to contribute to your child’s physical
development by implementing fine motor activities at home.
These activities involve the small muscles used to move
fingers and wrists, in addition to eye-hand coordination and
coordination of both hands together.
Fine motor skills are important because they can help your
child maintain small muscle control, and ultimately
contribute to his/her handwriting success.
Try these activities at home:
- String pasta or beads to make jewelry.
- Make rubber band or paper clip chains.
- Incorporate dot-to-dots and mazes into play. Ask your
child to first trace the path with his/her finger before
starting the activity.
- Cut construction paper around and around in a spiral
until s/he gets to the center.
- Encourage your child to zip, button or snap his/her own
jacket, giving assistance only when really needed.
- Play with shaving cream or pudding on a table or mirror
and have your child practice drawing letters, shapes or
pictures in it.
- Use a hole puncher to poke holes around the border of a
piece of paper. Have your child thread yarn through the
holes to make a birthday or holiday card.
- Teach your child how to snap his or her fingers.
Learning fine motor skills can also be incorporated into
your child's individual play with the following types of
materials: Legos, magnetic or connecting building pieces,
clay or playdough, spinning tops, and clothes pins.
Happy Fine Motoring!
