Kids Express Learning Center Visits Madison's Overture Center for the Arts
On Friday, February 18, four classrooms enjoyed a cultural
field trip to the Overture Center for Mermaid Theatre’s
adaptation of “Guess How Much I Love You", the award-winning
classic from author Sam McBratney and illustrator Anita
Jeram. Little Nutbrown Hare loves Big Nutbrown Hare as far
as he can reach and as high as he can hop. But Big Nutbrown
Hare loves him as far as his long arms can reach and as high
as his strong legs can hop. And so it continues…
Also included in the performance was "I Love My Little
Storybook", a tale in which an eager little bunny lies on
the grass and opens his book, and within moments, the story
he's reading comes alive in fascinating detail. From
illustrator Anita Jeram the performance is an endearing
celebration of the joy of reading.
Mermaid Theatre's unique adaptations of children's
literature have delighted more than three million young
people on four continents. The company ranks among North
America's most respected theatres for the young, and has won
widespread recognition for its important ambassadorial role.
Mermaid regularly crosses North America, and has represented
Canada in Japan, Mexico, Australia, England, Ireland,
Holland, Scotland, Wales, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore,
Taiwan and Vietnam. Mermaid Theatre's emphasis on
imaginative design elements, original music, and challenging
texts provides a rich opportunity to acquaint young
spectators with the visual and performing arts as well as
with the pleasures of reading. In addition to its
international engagements, Mermaid Theatre tours throughout
Nova Scotia each year, traveling with a specially designed
program designed to stimulate classroom learning as well as
enthusiasm for the art of puppetry.
Overture Center for the Arts also offers other children’s
programming including Children’s Arts Festival and Kids in
the Rotunda (formerly Kids in the Crossroads), a popular,
free performing arts series for children and families. Kids
in the Rotunda will continue to offer a relaxed environment
in which to enjoy a diverse lineup of local and regional
storytellers, musicians, juggler, theater troupes, magicians
and dancers. The performances are offered every Saturday
from fall through spring, and take place on the Rotunda
Stage.
