Summer on the Farm: Gardening with Children KELC’s Summer on Prairie View Farm is well underway, and is gearing up for the second of a two-session summer camp experience for children. All seven classrooms have taken on a new look as teachers engage children in activities for summer fun. Children have been busy planting and tending the new vegetable, fruit and flower gardens while incorporating nature study and art experiences. Inspired by Alice Water, a famous chef from California, the gardening and nature program continues to expand as a result of Water’s unique children’s gardening movement. As children develop an awareness of nature and ecology, gardening is a rewarding activity to reinforce these concepts, while encouraging creativity and self-discipline. Additionally, gardening with children allows us to teach children respect and concern for nature and our environment. Gardening with children provides an ideal time for children to experience nature’s beauty. Children learn how plants grow and what they require for survival and growth, the role of birds, insects and worms and many other gardening basics. KELC welcomes parents to visit the gardens with your child throughout the summer. You'll be surprised what you can learn about gardening from your child! Additional discussion can help you guide your child’s personal growth as well as their gardening knowledge and growth. KELC Summer on the Farm is also currently offering outdoor sports, arts & crafts in the Creative Connections Cottage, and Kids and Keyboards. |
