Sharing Our Secrets: Outdoor Summer Activities for Toddlers
Summer is a wonderful time to allow your toddler to explore
and enjoy all the wonderful beauty of nature. As a result,
we’re sharing some of our secrets for fun and exciting
outdoor exploration opportunities you and your child can
enjoy at home.
As you set out on new adventures with your little one, keep
in mind the precautions:
- Bring a hat to shade the eyes and prevent sunstroke.
- Be sure to apply sunscreen in you’re in the direct sun.
- Be sure that toddlers using riding toys such as
tricycles with large pedals, are clear of steep slopes.
- Watch toddlers very carefully around water-play pools.
Now, for the fun part! Here are some easy summer activities
you can enjoy with young children:
- A ride in a group stroller can be a real adventure
- Use plastic pails and shovels to dig in the sand
- Lie down on a blanket or grassy spot and talk about the
shapes you see in the clouds
- Visit the zoo or your local park
- Fill a plastic bag with small bread pieces and visit a
nearby pond to feed the ducks
- Chase squirrels, pigeons or other birds
- Play a game of tag around a tree with a thick trunk
- Provide small plastic watering cans so children can
water your flowers and/or garden
- Make homemade birdfeeders and discover different types
of birds who may visit
- Give your toddler a pail of water and large paintbrush
to paint the pavement
- Become an artist using sidewalk chalk
- Blow bubbles
- Enjoy reading, resting or playing a quiet game under a
shade tree
- Create a simple obstacle course using the outdoor toys
you already have
- Enjoy water play with the hose, sprinkler or wading pool
- Make a picnic lunch and find a nice spot in the yard to
enjoy
- Discuss your child’s favorite discoveries outdoors
