It's Sheep Shearing Time at Kids Express
Winter coats gave way to the 'shearest' of wool garb on
Friday morning, July 7th. Kids Express children watched in
awe as Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa Marie, KELC's 'Grazeland'
residents lost their wool to the shearer's clippers.
Children were able to dig their fingers into the soft
fleeces as they fell to the ground. Petting the shorn
animals gave the children a great sensory experience.
Monarch, KELC's gentle alpaca, spoke in mannerisms and hums to let us all know that he did not appreciate losing his winter wool. He seems almost embarrassed by his lean appearance sans several inches of beautiful wool. However, like his companions, the sheep and goats, he will weather the summer much better without his heavy coat. Shortly, Kids Express children will see how our beautiful fleeces are carded, cleaned, spun, dyed and knitted or crocheted into useful garments and household items. Miss Georgine's sister, Miss Joan, a former preschool teacher from Illinois, will once again visit with her spinning wheel to give KELC's summer campers hands on experiences with wool and yarn. |
