Birthday Party Ideas The Winter Quarterly newsletter from Madison's Dean Foundation for Health, Research & Education included a good 'birthday party' idea worth sharing with KELC families. The article, "Birthday Donations for Cancer Research Celebrate Mom's Recovery", tells of a 10 year old who raised $500 for breast cancer research in lieu of accepting gifts for her birthday. A direct quote from the article tells the story: "As Alexandra (Miles) planned her tenth birthday party, she decided that instead of receiving gifts, she wanted guests to donate to Dean Foundation for breast cancer research. All of Alexandra's friends loved the idea. The party was a double celbration, as Alexandra and her friends swam, ate pizza, and enjoyed birthday cake they also celebrated Rae's (Alexandra's mom) recovery. They raised $500." Character Education and Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program are both part of the curriculum at KELC. Part of what we hope children learn is compassion and responsibility for others in their school, community and world. Perhaps your family has a special charity or cause you support. Celebrating your child while teaching your child to help others could make for a memorable birthday tradition. Resource: Dean Foundation Features, Winter, 2006 - 2007 |
