Character Education at KELC Good character education helps children develop universal ethical values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that lead them toward becoming responsible citizens. At Kids Express Learning Center, teachers plan weekly activities designed to help children become conscious of the right thing to do, to be committed to doing the right thing and to become competent in doing the right thing. To expand on lessons and activities, teachers model high standards of behavior that children pick up on and are encouraged to imitate. How can parents help teachers in working toward character development? First of all, consider six pillars of character:
Then, ask yourself questions about what you model in your child's presence. For example, when you are honest and don't deceive, you are modeling trustworthiness. Following the Golden rule, tolerating differences, using good maners and refraining from using bad language teaches your child how much you respect others. Thinking before acting, using self-control and persevering, gives you a chance to model responsibility. Playing by the rules and listening to others shows your child the trait of fairness. Kind, compassionate acts, forgiveness and expressing gratitude model that you care about others. Being a good neighbor, cooperating with others and respecting authority models citizenship. Universal core ethical values are important to the moral development of young children. Parents and teachers can work together to give the next generation solid ground rules for living.
